Tononiya D. has never thought of writing as just writing, it was and has always been her escape, the way she copes with the world. Tononiya D. first started writing poetry as a way in which she could let down the masked smile she was forced to wear for the comfort of people around her. So all of Tononiya D.’s fear, pain, heartache, and loss became synchronized letters that held and told her truth, even if she was the only one that knew it. If you ask Tononiya D. about life and love, you will see that she places writing in both categories. She says, “I think that I fell in love with words and the freedom that they bring way before I ever knew what love was, or what life was supposed to be.”

Tononiya D. wrote her first novel ‘Claiming What’s mine’ because she wanted to create a positive picture for younger women that find themselves struggling with their sexual identity and the ideals of the people they love and admire most. Tononiya D. made the transition from writing poetry to writing novels with ease, all while making the book one that could be enjoyed by all readers. Tononiya D. quickly followed Claiming What’s Mine with her first book of poetry ‘PoeticSymmetry’ in hopes of setting free the emotions of her past to allow room for her new found passion of storytelling, although poetry will always be her first love. Tononiya D. felt the strong need to write her second novel ‘Cipher’ because she wants to remove all of the fallacies that have acted as wedges between women, especially women of color, that have kept us separated from one another for centuries and deprived of the knowledge, strength, encouragement, and understanding that comes from the unity of sisterhood.

Tononiya D. is an artist that not only pushes her readers to new levels, but one that constantly pushes herself to greater heights.
